Pennies for Patients

Every year our school participates in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser. This is an program that encourages schools to collect spare change to help support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The classroom that collects the most money in a three week period receives a pizza party! My students continuously brought in money to place in our little coin box; some children even brought in dollar bills.  Even though it was a competition for the pizza party, I made sure they knew they were helping out sick children as well. Long story short... our class raised over $200, our school over $2,000 (300 students), and TODAY we had a UNIFORM FREE DAY!  (Yes, our school requires uniforms). What a crazy day it was, but it was nice to have all the students rewarded for what they had put into the fundraiser.

Nothing wrong with a little "healthy" competition between teachers right? My good friend, Cheryl teaches 4th grade and we are in constant competition! It's also a good strategy to use with the students to encourage their participation. In the fall, our class brought in the most cans for the Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive.

This year, because my class collected over $200 in coins, they will receive a silver pennant to display in the classroom. I couldn't be more proud!

Even though we didn't win the pizza party, we were still proud that we had raised a lot of money to help sick children. That, in itself, is WINNING to us!

And so it begins....

Here I am, a "newby" at this blogging thing, but I will give it my best shot! I have so much to share and I can't wait to get started.  I have to give a couple of shout-outs to people who have helped me along the way. A huge thank-you goes out to Laine from A Little Piece of Africa for designing my blog. Such a talented and sweet lady to work with. She made it a smooth process and I am grateful for all her hard work!

My partner-in-crime and fellow second grade teacher, Amber Hardison, has been my inspiration in starting a blog and has helped me every step of the way. Amber and I have been best friends since Middle School and we have been lucky enough to continue our school career as teachers instead of students! Thank you for your help, ladybug! She has an amazing blog that I highly recommend you visit.
